Our Story
Los Titos Coffee & Organic Farm has been in our family for almost a century. The story begins with Honorato Sanz, a Spanish immigrant who came to Costa Rica in 1914 at the age of 16, seeking new opportunities. He bought the farm in the 1930s and turned it into a thriving cattle and coffee business. He had a simple but powerful message for his daughters: "When I am gone, never sell this farm, no matter what."
Honorato's second daughter, Margarita, married a Swiss agronomist named Andre Helfenberger, who shared her passion for the farm. In 1965, Andre took over the farm and brought with him a visionary approach to farming. He introduced sustainable and innovative practices that were ahead of their time, like hydroponics and crop diversification.
Andre's daughter, Adela Helfenberger, took over the farm around 2008. Adela continued her father's legacy and expanded it by transitioning the farm to organic practices in 2017. Along the way, Adela also started offering accommodations on the farm and became a super-host on Airbnb, providing travelers with a taste of farm life in Turrialba.
Today, Los Titos is a fully certified organic farm that produces coffee, dehydrated fruit products, gluten-free flours, and other items. Los Titos is also home to over 15 species of birds, armadillos, squirrels, and a resident sloth family that lives near our pool.
We are thrilled to share our story and our farm with visitors through guided tours. Our tours offer a unique opportunity to experience the history and heritage of the Turrialba region, our family's passion for farming, and the beauty of sustainable and organic practices. Come and discover the magic of Los Titos and create unforgettable memories with us.
